On October 4, the delegation led by the Speaker of the RA National Assembly Alen Simonyan met with the Speaker of the Russian Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko. Welcoming the RA NA Speaker, the RF FA Speaker of the Federation Council highly appreciated the Armenian-Russian multipolar, including inter-parliamentary cooperation.

The Speaker of the RA legislative body congratulated Valentina Matvienko on the successful holding of the elections of the FA State Duma and the results. During the meeting, the importance of cooperation in international inter-parliamentary organizations, including the CIS Inter-Parliamentary and the CSTO Parliamentary Assemblies was underlined.

Touching upon the settlement of security problems in the region and the establishment of lasting peace, the sides talked about the situation in the region and around the borders of Armenia, the immediate return of prisoners of war and other unsolved humanitarian issues. In this context, Alen Simonyan expressed gratitude to the Russian Federation and personally Valentina Matvienko for regular support in solving the mentioned problems. Both sides have recorded that there is a serious potential for raising cooperation between two countries to a higher level. The sides referred to the need to develop inter-parliamentary programs on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between two countries, which will be celebrated in 2022, as well as on the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance.

The role of the Armenian-Russian Inter-Parliamentary Committee was highlighted in the parliamentary format. An agreement was reached to activate the cooperation between the sectoral committees of the RA National Assembly and the RF Federation Council of the Federal Assembly. At the end of the meeting, touching upon the postponement of Valentina Matvienko’s visit to Armenia due to COVID 19 in 2020, Alen Simonyan has reaffirmed the invitation, noting that he waits for his partner in Armenia at a convenient time for her.
